How to Celebrate Clean Oceans Week

Clean Oceans Week is an annual reminder of the importance of our oceans. It provides us with an opportunity to increase awareness about the various challenges our marine ecosystems face. Including the urgent need for their protection! Especially among younger populations, who will undoubtedly face the repercussions of our actions today. Keep reading to explore the importance of teaching our kids about our planet and how you can encourage them to be environmental advocates.

What is Clean Oceans Week?

Clean Oceans Week (July 1 – 8)  is a week aimed at drawing attention to the critical issues impacting our oceans. Such as pollution, overfishing, and climate change. It provides an opportunity for individuals, organizations, and businesses to come together and take meaningful action to protect the marine landscape! As well as the chance to educate the youth on the beauty and importance of the ocean, as well as the life in it. During Clean Oceans Week, we encourage you to set a goal of inspiring your little ones to seek knowledge and become stewards of our oceans.

Teaching Kids About Our Planet

Getting kids involved in the conversation about our planet is crucial. It is never too early to foster a sense of responsibility or instill values about the protection of our environment. By connecting children to nature we can inspire a new generation of environmental advocates. Simply encouraging them to spend time outdoors will teach them an appreciation for our planet. As well as serve as an opportunity to educate them on why it should be protected.

For Clean Oceans Week, we encourage you to participate in outdoor activities like beach cleanups or nature walks. If you don’t leave near the ocean, you can visit an aquarium or marine center. Engage your littles in conversations about marine life, ecosystems, and our impact on the oceans. At a young age, this is often as simple as instilling a love for animals! But by teaching children about the beauty of our oceans, we empower them to make environmentally conscious choices. And, as they age, to become active participants in ocean conservation.

How to Celebrate Clean Oceans Week

  1. Sensory Play: Sensory play is a fantastic way to engage children and introduce them to the wonders of the ocean. Encourage them to explore textures, colors, and sounds associated with the marine environment. Whether it’s building sandcastles at the beach, creating an underwater-themed sensory bin at home, or planning a walk near a water body. Sensory play provides an interactive and educational experience that they won’t forget.
  2. Arts & Crafts: Tap into children’s creativity by engaging them in ocean-themed art projects. Encourage them to draw, paint, or craft marine creatures. Consider using recycled materials or trash located on a walk! These activities not only allow kids to express themselves but instill a love for the ocean and the protection of its inhabitants.
  3. Virtual Experiences: If you don’t live close to an ocean, explore virtual resources. Many organizations and institutions offer virtual tours and webinars. While educational videos can be accessed from the comfort of your home. These virtual experiences can broaden children’s understanding of marine life and inspire them to take action.
